Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems provide high-quality, clean power to crucial loads. When mains power is lost the battery has to deliver sufficient power for long enough to enable a controlled shut-down or for a standby power source to come on line. Power Backup applications include data and information security systems, communications systems, process control systems and, in fact, any system where loss of power would be critical to the operational requirements.
Typical batteries for UPS applications are:
- Industrial UPS: 110 or 220V, 100 to 200 Ah (but up to 1500 Ah) for backup of 30 min to 1 hour or longer.
- Data Centres: 400 V, 100 to 400 Ah for 15 min to 30 min
- Control and Communication: a very wide range of possibilities with batteries of 10000 Ah required to operate for 8 hours having been produced for oil exploration platforms.
