Power Backup Systems

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems provide high-quality, clean power to crucial loads. When mains power is lost the battery has to deliver sufficient power for long enough to enable a controlled shut-down or for a standby power source to come on line. Power Backup applications include data and information security systems, communications systems, process control systems and, in fact, any system where loss of power would be critical to the operational requirements.

Typical batteries for UPS applications are:

  • Industrial UPS: 110 or 220V, 100 to 200 Ah (but up to 1500 Ah) for backup of 30 min to 1 hour or longer.
  • Data Centres: 400 V, 100 to 400 Ah for 15 min to 30 min
  • Control and Communication: a very wide range of possibilities with batteries of 10000 Ah required to operate for 8 hours having been produced for oil exploration platforms.

The purpose of having a back-up system is to provide security and, in the event of mains power failure, the battery must work. If the battery does not work then this is worse than having no system installed as this provides a false security.

The ranges of Nickel-Cadmium batteries from IBLUK offer numerous advantages to ensure complete system reliability and security. Our H pocket plate or XHP sinter/PBE high-rate H-type batteries are specially designed for discharges over short periods, making them ideal for constant power applications. Medium-rate M-type pocket plate batteries are ideal for sustaining loads from 30 minutes to 2 hours and our Vantex M range meet ultra-low maintenance requirements. For longer discharges the L type pocket plate and the Vantex L are the appropriate choice.
