ANSWERS

Q1 – Can you select the right battery for me?

A1 - Yes. Based on your application details, we can carry out a battery sizing using the IEEE 1115 standard to select the appropriate nickel-cadmium battery.

Q2 – Can you help me choose a stand?

A2 - Yes. As part of the battery sizing we can carry out an analysis to choose a battery stand based on your specification. In addition, we can offer a battery and stand design service for your battery room at reasonable rates.

Q3 – What are the regulations concerning ventilation?

A3 - The European standard covering this is BS EN 50272-2:2001 Safety requirements for secondary batteries and battery installations Part 2: Stationary Batteries and it is recommended that you should conform to this. This can be purchased from the British Standards Institute and the current price for non members is £112. However, we can offer a design service for these calculations at reasonable rates.

Q4 – A lead acid battery is much cheaper. Why should I buy a nickel-cadmium battery?

A4 – The initial cost of a lead acid cell will generally be cheaper than a nickel-cadmium cell and, of course, some lead acid batteries are more expensive than others. You need to look at your needs in terms of lifetime, reliability, performance, temperature and the number of cycles required, to decide which battery type is the most suitable for your application. We can help you with this, please contact us.

Q5 – Will you tell me I need a nickel-cadmium battery if a lead acid battery is all I need?

A5 - No. It is not in our interest to have dissatisfied customers. If a nickel-cadmium battery is not the most cost effective solution for you then we will tell you. We can even tell you, in our opinion, which is the best solution.

Q6 – I currently use a 400 Ah lead acid battery; should I replace this with a 400Ah nickel-cadmium battery?

A6 - Unfortunately, battery sizing is not that simple and depends on many factors. The choice of battery depends on the application and, generally, the higher the performance then the smaller the nickel-cadmium battery required compared to lead acid. Other factors such as temperature, lifetime requirement, and depth of discharge also affect the sizing. Please contact us if you are unsure of your requirements.
